Monet- The Art of Impressionism

Updated on June 26, 2014

Impressionist Painter

The water lily was made famous by Claude Monet.. don' you think? When you think of them don't t you think of Monet? I know that I do. Wouldn't you just love to visit Claude Monet's Giverny and stay there forever? Who can blame him for painting the water lilies and dear little bridge that rest there? I have two little children's books describing a visit there by two different little girls. I confess, I feel like a little girl when I think about Giverny and its delicate world.

Claude Monet painted Giverny even while going blind, I would assume it was because its image had already burned inside his heart. Impressionistic painting lends to painting from ones emotions no?

Monet Quotes

Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.

~~

Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love.

~~

For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life - the light and the air which vary continually. For me, it is only the surrounding atmosphere which gives subjects their true value.

~~

I am following Nature without being able to grasp her, I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.

~~

I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.

~~

My life has been nothing but a failure.

~~

No one is an artist unless he carries his picture in his head before painting it, and is sure of his method and composition.

~~

People discuss my art and pretend to understand as if it were necessary to understand, when it's simply necessary to love.

Claude Monet

Water Lilies

Look at the image below, it is part of a series of paintings of Water lilies, which Impressionist painter Claude Monet created from his garden in Giverny. He would paint at different times of the day to capture the unique natural lighting effects, which are so very prevalent in the South of France.

"When Does Winter Start? A Flower Fairy Called Out-and When Does Summer End?"

Did you know that flower fairies fret about the seasons? It is logical isn't it? They want to know when Winter will come and Summer ends. There is much planning that they must do, to help their garden flowers make it through.

"When Does Winter Start? A Flower Fairy Called Out-and When Does Summer End?"

When does Winter start?

A fragile fairy

stood against the wind of Fall

and protested its coming.

Day Lily had worried about her timing.

Her flowers

had not been carefully covered

as yet

fore she simply could not accept their sleeping.

She would miss them so

in their repose.

She desperately needed more time

to savour their loveliness

and note their stems green lines.

The clock was surely ticking.

That's what legends and myths

charted

on the surface of her scrapbook

and noted by her

as not to be missed.

Poor little fairy

poor little dear

she wanted her treasures

to last and last

forever.

When does Fall start?

Another fairy in the garden sang forth

not realizing it was already there

losing time to gather leaves

to cover her hydrangeas

allowing them to rest

till springtime

the next calendar year.

She had lost track of time

I guess.

With so much to do

a gardens care taking

she exclaimed

was never quite through.

Poor little fairy

poor little dear.

she wanted her treasures

to last and last

forever.

Oh! When does Spring start again?

I miss it so!

Said a magical creature with wings.

It seems my fellow angels have been sleeping

as they worried bout the cold sting

that Fall

then Winter brings.

Wake up I say

as little seedlings poke their heads

above the dried up leaves

that had covered them

in their seasonal sleep.

OH! Poor little fairies

poor little dears.

They wanted her treasures

to last and last

forever.

When does Summer start?

Tis a flower fairies ball

as they dance on clouds like feathers

and send their secret calls.

Butterflies and honey bees

dragonflies and ladybugs

all decorate their days

for flowers fairies to cheer

and love.

Sunshiny smiles

from every human child

as they chime along with the magic

of a flowers faeries call.

And then?

It all begins again.

For another spring winged creature

frets along the creek

saying when should I start planning for Winter

and oh when will Summer then end?

Tis such a pitiful rhyme

for a fairy counting time

and drumming up the courage to say

when is the last day

of Summer?

And oh, oh my

poor little fairies

poor little dears

Who only wanted their treasures

to last and last

forever.

Linnea in Monet's Garden

~~*~~

I collect children's books most especially for their illustrations, but when I come across one that has both a wonderful tale as well as good illustrations that catch my eye.. well wow, I am double blessed!

Linnea in Monet's Garden (Linnea Books)
Linnea in Monet's Garden (Linnea Books)
I own this little book. It is a charming tale of Linnea, a dear little girl who goes to visit Monet's garden. It is written with such delightful charm you feel as if you are this little girl, experiencing the delights of finding a glorious treasure which is Monet's art. Written by Christina Bjork and illustrated by Lena Anderson.. I promise this lovely tale will delight and educate you at the same time. And do you know what else? You can read and/or give it to a child and they will be equally as blessed by it.

Aquatic Plants - Waterlilies By Tauqeer Ul Hassan

Of all the aquatic plants that grow in our ponds, it is the waterlily that epitomizes the subject to many people. To my mind there are few plants -aquatic or land-based - to compare with the pure exotic pleasure that a succession of waterlily flowers can bring.

Fortunately for waterliliophiles like me, there are plenty of varieties to choose from; the sad thing is that the majority of them grow too big for the small ponds that most of us possess today. It is for this reason that in the early 1900s the French hybridist Latour-Marliac, amongst others, devoted himself to the creation of newer and better miniature or dwarf varieties, many of which are classed under the category known as the Pygmaea hybrids. Tragically, he took much of his crossbreeding data with him to his grave, but at least he left us with a fabulous range of small and compact varieties, even if the plant parentage of most of them is not fully known.

The pygmy waterlilies are excellent for sinks, troughs or ponds where the water is no deeper than 30cm (12in). Most will grow contentedly in just 10cm (4in) of water, or even in the deeper marginal shelves of a larger pond.

There are really just two notes of caution when it comes to growing these small and compact varieties. The first concerns the likelihood of the plants freezing in winter: despite being hardy, the plants grow in very shallow water which, in the harshest of winters, can freeze solid. The plants should, therefore, be provided with sufficient depth to ensure that the rhizomes remain unfrozen during the coldest spells. Ii this is not possible, they should be protected, either by draining the pool in autumn, and then covering the lily with thick straw, or by lifting the plant in mid-autumn and keeping it in water in a frost-free place until planting time again.

The second warning is not so serious for the plant, but by ignoring it you could be forfeiting some excellent color, with resultant substandard plants. Small waterlilies are perfect for growing in contained water features, such as a barrel, tub or sink, but there is a temptation for many of us to fit a small ornamental fountain, or a regular drip-drip feature of some kind. All waterlilies, of whatever size, dislike moving water around their leaves and stems (which suppresses flowering), and this problem can be exacerbated in a container.

About Inspiration

Claude Monet was inspired over and over by the same garden which he called Giverny. Do you think that is possible for you? To find inspiration in something you see everyday?
